Project Update: Choose Thy Adventure - 05. The Bird Throne

Hail and well met Wanderers.

The fates return once more, with another chapter in Willow’s journey as guided by thy choices:

You listen out for anything that may guide your decision, and ignoring the smell of campfire nearby you instead elect to scale the tower to rest away from the forest floor. You are hurried on as it becomes evident that your decision to linger in the open has attracted the attention of some less than desirable creatures. Eyes glinting in the moonlight appear in the nearby trees, first two, then 4, and in no time at all you count a pair waiting in all directions. Luckily your decision is made, and you begin to scale the tower away from the blink-less gaze of whatever awaits you in the dark of the woodland. But how well are you able to climb? Such feats of athleticism are not the purview of a witch, let alone in the dark. Fate rolls your die, adding thy +3 bonus with a DC of 12

SUCCESS! With a total of 12 (9 + 3) thou art barely able to make it up the tower without slipping, a fall from such height would spell disaster even without hungry eyes just waiting for such an opportunity…

After a gruelling climb up rubble and vine, you alight atop the watch tower exhausted and sore. Looking out you see tree tops bathed in the silver light of the moon, a lazy trail of smoke escaping from beneath their bows maybe 1/4 of a mile from where you are. Beyond that it becomes impossible to make out anything other than darkness, save for something that is moving in the trees not far away. Turning to look to the tower top itself, it becomes immediately clear why you heard no birdsong. A nest of rubble and root has been made atop the tower, by something far larger than any bird you’ve seen. You see no bones or hint of predation, but do spy a great black feather that rests amongst the pile. Your eyes dart back to the forest and sky, searching for signs of the nests owner.

At first nothing, wind rustles through the moonlit trees below whilst the unfamiliar starscape glitters overhead. And then you see it, saved only by your keen eyes once more, stars blinking out in the sky as something large and winged blocks their light for but a moment. You have only a few seconds to decide what to do as the creature appears to be moving closer and closer, likely returning to its nest…

You could attempt to hide amongst the vines and rubble and get a sight on the beast before deciding your next move. You could present yourself as a friend and ally, and hope that the approaching creature is open to such diplomacy. Or you could attempt to scare the creature away, attacking it before it knows you are there…”
