Project Update: All About the In-Betweens — Yellow Recipes
Hello again, neighbor! We’ve reached 349! Just one away from unlocking the Catfish recipe! What a great achievement to reach while we’re here at Gen Con. There’s plenty more where that came from, too! We’ve got a great update for all of you here about some of the strategies for the yellow cards.
You’ve gotten a chance to see the game played in our previous update. Meat and veg being split down the middle is not only the polite thing to do for our vegetarian/vegan friends, it’s also a core mechanic of the game! We touched on these other recipes a little in our playthrough, but we wanted to feature them here as both a way to make sure the mechanics were clear and as a little sneak preview of the game! The dad jokes at the top are always everyone’s favorite groan inducing parts.
Meat cards have a red background. Vegetable cards are green. Then we have these yellow recipes. Yellow cards are items wrapped, contained, whatever, to make them not quite one or the other. During the game design process, we hadn’t planned on these being in there from the start! It was one of those “Hey, wait a minute…” moments as we placed down our first set of baked beans. This is in a container! Why can’t it go anywhere? And thus the yellow card was born.
Whether in foil, a dish, or just plain ol’ made of bread like our Hawaiian Pizza here, these recipes can straddle the middle. It’s actually a great tactic to bully out other players over precious, precious space. Look at the size of all of these! (You can find the shape and size of the recipe’s polyomino in the top left corner.)
Getting one of these on the grill is risky. All of them have big point thresholds, but they’re in narrow windows. If these burn, there’s a steep decline of points. But maybe that’s what you want! Maybe you want to make sure that your opponents can’t get anything on the grill — points be damned!
Of course, even with their huge power, they still have to abide by the rules. They have to touch an edge or another piece to be placed. You might be able to straddle the line of meat and veg (literally, you can place them in the middle), but you have to be touching something to get it out there.
The yellow cards provide a unique strategy that might lead to huge points or it might just keep your fellow players off of the grill long enough for you to score points elsewhere! You be the judge on how best to run the grill. Because you’re the best out of all the grill masters. Obviously.
And, hey, just as a reminder, we’re currently at Gen Con (the largest board game convention in North America) right now! If you want to come and visit, we’re in booth 1321 and 1521, which sounds far apart but is actually right next to each other. We’re also in Hoosier room 140! Because of how busy Gen Con can get, we won’t be around to answer questions in the comments this week, but! Rest assured that we will be back as soon as we can!
Now we’re ready for the achievements! We’re so close to unlocking the Catfish recipe so let’s get those backers going! Tell you family, friends, and everyone about License to Grill!
That’s all for now! We’ll see you soon!
