$42 to Ship "Just the Dice" within the EU? MCDM are you ok?

Hi MCDM team, First, thank you for making the “Dicefunder” happen—seeing these dice come to life for Draw Steel is genuinely exciting. However, I have serious concerns about the shipping cost for my pledge, which came out to $41.80 to ship from Amsterdam to Vienna. Considering my “All Five Hero Dice Sets - Just the Dice” pledge contains 10d20s and 5d6s without any special packaging, this amount feels unreasonable. By weight, even if each die is on the heavier side, this totals around 160 grams. That’s a small, lightweight parcel, and I know from experience that shipping a package of this size within the EU (or even across longer distances) generally doesn’t cost nearly this much. For comparison, I recently received the DnD 2024 Player’s Guide from the U.S.—a hefty hardcover book—for less than half the shipping cost here. A quick check with standard EU postage rates shows that shipping a small parcel from the Netherlands to Austria at a weight up to 2kg can be as low as €6.60 for letterbox size or €10.50 for a small parcel—both far below the $41.80 you’re asking and well above the weight of 15 dice. Given that Amsterdam is only 720 miles (1158 km) from Vienna, this shipping cost is simply baffling. This also makes me seriously worried about what we’ll be charged to ship the Draw Steel hardcover books (from the other crowdfunder). I expected those to come with higher shipping costs, but I thought the dice would ship at a more reasonable EU rate. It seems our expectations of “reasonable” may be very different. Could you take a look at the shipping calculations or explain the logistics behind this? It’s frustrating to feel like shipping may be priced well above what it needs to be, especially after supporting the campaign. I believe many of us backers would appreciate some transparency on this and, hopefully, a more realistic shipping approach for lightweight rewards. Thank you for understanding. I have not pressed “Place My Order” in the survey form, and I’m hopeful we can find a solution.

Project Update: Nice Dice! What's next?

Well that’s our first Dicefunder! 😀 2,700 of you raised over $300k for these cool new dice! That is not a small thing folks, these are dice for a game that, technically, doesn’t exist yet! So this is a major milestone. Though to be fair our patrons and backers are already playing Draw Steel. The success of this crowdfunder means y’all will get to play Draw Steel with Draw Steel dice WAY before the actual hardcovers ship next year.

It’s incredibly cool that we get to do this. Our operations team, Geoff & Jerry had an idea, they thought folks would like new unique dice for our new game and they pressed the rest of the team into service and you folks will see, in just a few months, the finished result!

Getting to do that, to have a small but doable idea and bring it to market where it lives or dies purely on its own merits, no publisher or studio above us, is a huge privilege and one we take seriously. Getting to make Draw Steel at all is a major miracle, but being able to have an idea for something like custom dice, and then just…bring it to the people, ask “Do you want this?” is a huge thrill for all of us.

We are already working with Chessex to get the dice made. We didn’t wait, we committed early because we had faith and, thanks to you folks, that faith paid off.

We’ll have prototypes of the Good King Omund dice to show off soon, but for now let’s talk about the plan moving forward.

Backer Survey

We are hard at work on the backerkit site that we will use to collect shipping details, we expect to send out surveys in around 2-3 weeks.

Pre-orders

We have a limited pre-order store that will open up later this week, but Hero boxes will only be available as add-ons for existing backers. This is because we need to get our final orders in place quickly to meet delivery timelines. If you missed this campaign, we plan to have more dice offerings later next year and will sell any extra dice remaining after fulfillment via our mcdm.shop.

Shipping Starts in January

Will collect shipping fees, sales tax, VAT, etc starting around January 7th when we return from holiday break. Shipping should begin shortly afterwards. We will be shipping from three hubs: Amsterdam, New South Wales, and Florida. Dice being much lighter than books, it appears that we will be able to use air freight to get the dice from the factory in Europe to the delivery hubs more quickly than past campaigns. That said, we have no control over international shipping and have learned the hard way that the best laid plans...
