Same, I had to look it up. The Deep One is an enormous monster living in the depths of Lake Evendim, and Alain was a Prince a generation or so after Vanyel's time. He had Animal Mindspeech and could communicate with The Deep One, something about a promise to not reveal his existence/thoughts/whatever to anyone, not even his Companion. It's from an anthology called Masters of Fantasy from 2004.
