'Departure' is the new album from renowned shanty group Pressgang Mutiny. Prepare to throw out everything you thought you knew about shanties!
Combining a capella field recordings, 21st century production, guest musicians and of course our signature four-part vocal harmony, we've created a showcase for everything shanties could be. We've connected the dots to other musical forms with similar roots. We've pushed sonic boundaries. And we've done it all while staying completely true to the tradition (oh, we've done our homework alright).
We took inspiration particularly from Ashley MacIsaac's Hi, How Are You Today? and what it did with Cape Breton fiddle music. It challenged all assumptions while celebrating the true heart of tradition.
And like that album, Departure is also a heck of a lot of fun to listen to.
We know this album will help break down the barriers and welcome brand new audiences to discover the incredible musical genre that is shanties.
