Introduction

Fans of classic mystery fiction, you are in for a treat! Three of the greatest tales of crime and confidence are given a lively and unique presentation by artist VINCENT MALLIE: Arthur Conan Doyle's "A STUDY IN SCARLET" featuring the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, Maurice Leblanc's "ARSENE LUPIN: GENTLEMAN THIEF" starring the titular anti-hero, and Robert Louis Stevenson's haunting "THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE"!

For over 130 years, the world has been enraptured by the stoic, ephemeral genius of the world’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. Created by British author Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, Holmes has sparked the imagination of generations of fans around the world through four novels and 56 short stories. He has been the subject of countless adaptations and portrayals. Guinness World Records lists him as the most portrayed literary human character in film and television history. The name Sherlock Holmes sparks recognition from nearly every person on Earth. And yet, few are familiar with his very first adventure.

Holmes first appeared in the 1887 detective novel “A Study in Scarlet,” which met very little fanfare until the character found more widespread popularity through his serialized short stories in The Strand Magazine. That first adventure recounts the first meeting of Holmes and the man who would become his stalwart partner against crime, Dr. John Watson. And now, that first sprawling adventure is vividly retold through the animated vision of illustrator Vincent Mallie.
On July 15th, 1905, novelist Maurice Leblanc introduced the world to ARSENE LUPIN, a charming, clever, and debonair master thief capable of rivaling even the most popular sensational sleuth of the time, Sherlock Holmes. Through a series of 17 novels and 39 novellas, this dashing anti-hero became the inspiration for over a century’s worth of film, television, comic books, and animation hits that continue to this very day, including the recent live-action LUPIN series on Netflix and the beloved anime series LUPIN THE 3rd (which itself celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year).

Now, 120 years later, Magnetic Press is proud to offer a new English edition of the original Arsène Lupin collection first published in 1907: "ARSENE LUPIN, GENTLEMAN THIEF." This collection of the first nine novellas reintroduces the master thief for a new generation, vividly illustrated by celebrated artist Vincent Mallie.

Includes "Herlock Sholmes Arrives Too Late", the infamous first meeting between these two legendary characters written by Leblanc in 1906.
(Leblanc changed the name on Conan Doyle's request...)

One of the most popular and long-lasting "penny dreadful" books of the 1880s is, without question, Robert Louis Stevenson's "THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE." This gothic tale of horror and mystery follows a London-based lawyer who investigates a series of events linking his good friend Dr Henry Jekyll and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde. The story so resonated in the imagination of readers since its first publication in 1886 that it has become a reference point for any exploration of hidden duality and dark secrets. The names "Jekyll and Hyde" have themselves become synonymous with "good" and "evil."

This brand-new adaptation by Vincent Mallie captures the darkness, confusion, and search for truth in an animated style as never seen before.

The Books

Each volume in this three-book library is presented in a premium linen-textured hardcover with Magnetic's signature curved corners.

A STUDY IN SCARLET features over eighty full-color and black-and-white plates, spreads, and spot illustrations that bring this classic novel to life through 124 pages of mystery and suspense.

Hand-painted in a style vaguely reminiscent of the works of Hayao Miyazaki (whose first animated series, SHERLOCK HOUND, was thoroughly inspired by Holmes and his adventures), this two-part tale sets the tone and tenor of a series of brilliant mysteries that would last the test of time.

ARSENE LUPIN features 160 pages of mystery and intrigue, with over eighty full-color and black-and-white plates, spreads, and spot illustrations that bring the original charming scoundrel to life!

Illustrated in a hand-painted style appropriately reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki (whose first directorial feature was LUPIN THE 3rd: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO), these nine tales are the perfect introduction to this timeless character and his breathtakingly brilliant exploits, including his first encounter with Sherlock Holmes! (Or rather “Herlock Sholmes,” as originally published at the time for copyright reasons…)

Vincent's newest entry in the series, THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE, captures Robert Louis Stevenson's mystery in a similarly illustrated style, presenting this dark allegory through the lens of an animated feature as if by Studio Ghibli. With 43 full-color and black-and-white plates and spot illustrations throughout the 80-page presentation, this classic novella will haunt you long after the last page is turned.

About the Authors

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Author)

Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Irish Catholic parents of meager means. He was sent to boarding schools at the age of nine, an institutional experience he came to despise as cruel and medieval. He pursued his own education in medicine and botany at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal Botanic Garden while also initiating a modest interest in writing short stories. His first published piece, “The Mystery of Sasassa Valley,” was published in September 1879, the same month as his first academic article, “Gelsemium as a Poison.” It seemed that the direction of his interests were set early in his career…

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and a Master of Surgery degree, he pursued a medical practice for several years, first as a ship’s surgeon on the SS Mayumba and later through an independent practice in Portsmouth. But business was slow, so he returned to writing fiction while waiting for patients. His first work featuring Sherlock Holmes, “A Study in Scarlet,” was written in three weeks with all rights sold to the publisher for a meager fee. It wasn’t until the character's popularity grew evident that Doyle realized his mistake -- he began writing more short stories featuring the character for a new publisher, Strand Magazine. Eventually, the task of feeding their hunger for more Holmes tales started to wear on him, and he raised his prices in an attempt to discourage the demand, but his rate continued to be met making him one of the best-paid authors of his time.

Outside of writing, he led a colorful life mixing academic interests in politics, law, and the paranormal with interests in sports and architecture. He served as a physician during the Second Boer War and wrote a book defending the crown’s participation, for which he was knighted by King Edward VII in 1902. He was also quite fascinated by mystical spiritualism and psychic phenomena, even writing a two-volume book on The History of Spiritualism in 1926.

After a full and fascinating life, Doyle suffered a heart attack at the age of 71 and passed away on July 7, 1930.

MAURICE LEBLANC (Author)

Born in 1864, Maurice Marie Emile Leblanc grew up in Scotland having been sent there for safety during the Franco-German War of 1870. Upon returning to France to complete his studies in Rouen as a teenager, he met noted authors Gustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant, inspiring a desire to become a writer. He headed to Paris in 1888 and began his career as a journalist and storyteller with his first novel, “Une femme” published in 1893. He continued to write books and plays through the turn of the century, including the autobiographical “L’Enthousiasme.” In 1905, however, a seemingly simple short story commission would prove to be his legacy. Requested to write a “Sherlock Holmes-like” tale for the magazine Je Sais Tout, he produced the first Arsène Lupin short story which instantly captured the public’s interest. He was immediately commissioned to write more tales featuring the character, and within two years collected the first novel, ARSENE LUPIN, GENTLEMAN THIEF.  A second collection of short stories followed, and his success was firmly established. He received a Legion of Honor award in 1908 while continuing to invent new adventures for his popular anti-hero. He tried to repeat the success with new characters, but none matched the popularity of Lupin. He even tried to kill Lupin in a 1910 story, “813”, but ultimately revived him in a follow-up tale not long after. In 1939, as Nazi Germany threatened to invade, he took refuge in Perpignan, where he died of pneumonia in 1941. So revered as a national treasure, his body was exhumed from Perpignan and reburied in Paris at the Montparnasse cemetery in 1947.

Robert Louis Stevenson (Author)

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh Scotland during the frigid winter of 1850 to a devout lighthouse engineer and his wife. While lighthouse engineering was a family profession, he chose a different path: as a storyteller. He included law in his studies and was admitted to the bar, but he never formally practiced law, choosing instead to follow the muse of writing, be it novella, poetry, or essay. He made numerous connections during his exploratory wanderings of Europe, including a chance meeting of the woman who would become his wife, Fanny Osbourne. She was fleeing her American husband's infidelity with an art study in France when their paths crossed, and even though the relationship started as a friendship, she remained in his thoughts even when she returned to the States, so much so that he eventually crossed the country by train to be with her. The trip nearly killed him, and even though he recovered within a year, the experience gave him plenty of time to conceive of many stories. By the time they eventually married, he was "a mere complication of cough and bones, much fitter for an emblem of mortality than a bridegroom." They moved several times between Scotland and the States before settling down in Southern England. He grew largely bedridden but very prolific, writing the bulk of his most popular work, including Treasure Island, Kidnapped, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and various other pieces.

Still seeking a climate that might restore his health, he spent nearly three years wandering the Eastern and Central Pacific, spending great periods in the Hawaiian Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, and the Samoan Islands. He and his wife eventually settled in Samoa where he took the native name Tusitala (Samoan for "Teller of Tales"). He wrote more words there than anywhere else, most of them addressing the cultural observations and injustices he witnessed toward the various Polynesian peoples from the other emerging world powers such as Europe and America.

He died at the age of 44 from a stroke.

VINCENT MALLIE (Illustrator)

Vincent Mallie was born in 1973 and spent his youth copying the artwork inside his favorite comics. He continued to refine his art through graphic design schools and workshops before publishing his first comic work, “Hong Kong Triad” with high school friend Joel Parnotte. That series was so well received it was reprinted several times, leading to other projects with major publishers such as Soleil, Glenat, and Vents d’ouest. His most prominent series to date has been Le Grand Mort, an 8-volume series with writers Regis Loisel and Jean-Blaise Djian. In the meantime, however, he has also refined his work to be featured in numerous gallery exhibits throughout Europe, elevating his approachable, animated style to fine art. His most recent work is “Tenebreuse”, a medieval tale written by the late Hubert Boulard (The Ogre Gods Saga). His recent adaptation of Maurice LeBlanc's classic mystery novel ARSENE LUPIN, GENTLEMAN THIEF was enthusiastically received, leading to these companion projects featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Jekyll.

Shipping

This project ships worldwide. That means Customs-friendly delivery with VAT accounted for prior to shipping.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The pledge prices listed DO NOT INCLUDE SHIPPING OR VAT, which will be calculated and applied when you fill out the final survey after the campaign. This helps us ensure sufficient postage is collected without overcharging you with unspecific estimates upfront. Trust us – with shipping rates fluctuating as rapidly as they have for the last 2 years, this is best for everyone!

Final rates will be calculated based on actual weights and current postage rates AT THE TIME OF CAMPAIGN CLOSURE, but as of today's estimates, you can expect a 4 lb order (~1 book plus extras) to be somewhere in these ballpark ranges:

  • DOMESTIC UNITED STATES: $16-19
  • EU/UK: $28-46
  • CANADA: $24-30
  • AUSTRALIA: $30-40
  • CHINA/MACAO/HK: $36-42
  • NORWAY/SWITZERLAND:$35-42

Lesser weights may come in a bit lower, and heavier packages may come in higher, but we will do our best to offer the most reasonable rates available at the time of fulfillment. Please note the Slipcases may weigh in at 8-10 lbs, pending determination during production.

Global Shipping conditions continue to make international shipping rates and delivery times somewhat unpredictable. While we have built our schedule with what should be ample padding for unforeseen delays, things happen. We will do our best to be prepared for anything that could impact our shipping estimates.

Timeline

All three books are complete and in the final stages of production.  They will be delivered to the printer as soon as the campaign is over. The campaign-exclusive bonus items will be ordered immediately once orders are locked in the Pledge Manager. We aim to have all items in our hands by May 2025 so that we can begin fulfilling orders in June. This estimate includes what we hope will be sufficient padding for any unexpected shipping delays that might arise. Who knows -- if things go well, we might even be able to start shipping sooner!

Risks and Challenges

Having successfully completed and fulfilled over 40 crowdfunding campaigns over the years, we're quite experienced at delivering everything as offered. With well over 200 published titles, Magnetic Press is ready to continue that expectation with this particular title. Aside from Force Majeure surprises (pandemics, natural disasters, significant global or domestic shipping disruptions, etc), this should be extremely straightforward. The books themselves are print-ready, and additional production work brought about for this campaign, such as stretch goal production and ancillary items, will be completed in a timely fashion for a June 2025 release.
