I think it's just following the idea of specifics beating general rules.
Since "Called to a Greater Purpose" tells you specifically where to play the Role card, you follow it. But any effect that says "play the top card of the Villain deck" or the card played each turn are played based on his character card.
Since the Roles have no exclusive wording, like Mr. Fixer's Styles for example, there's no reason you can't be given more than 1.
