Summary

The 5 bases that make up all life on earth, engraved on a powerful magnet casing, ready for your whiteboard or fridge!

I've been making magnets for a while now and love learning about science enough to nearly double major in biology in college. From immunology, to biochemistry, O chem and P chem, I was that odd ball engineering student sitting in those courses. Now I hope to perpetuate that passion and share it with others by offering these nucleotide engraved magnets!

The bases that make up RNA and on the left, DNA on the right.

Nucleotides, the building blocks for DNA and RNA. We wouldn't exist without them and they dictate how life on earth functions. Note* A backer caught the misplaced thymine on the RNA side, it will have a guanine in its place. Thank you!

Close ups of each base magnet

In this project you will have the option to buy them in the following formats:
  • Individual bases (maybe you have a favorite?)
  • DNA set (the 4 bases that make up DNA)
  • RNA set (the 4 bases that make up RNA)
  • The 5 bases that make up life
  • One set each of DNA and RNA

Each magnet is CNC machined from billet aluminum rod, deep fiber laser engraved for a bit of a topographic look, hand sanded to a brushed satin finish, and assembled with a bolt in magnet design. The aluminum magnet casing is designed so that the magnet sits just below the surface and is covered with a felt pad to dampen impact force during use due to ensure the very very long longevity of the magnet. The magnet has a rated pull force of about 13 pounds. This sounds heft and it feels hefty, but in person it feels more like 5 pounds, way more than enough to hold thick sheets of paper, keys, shirts, small bags, or whatever you may utilize to hold against a good steel surface.

How it is assembled

Each magnet comes in a plastic case to protect them during transit.

Dimensions

  • Dimensions
  • These magnets are 0.73" in diameter, 1.05" long and weigh 0.85oz [24 grams].
  • Magnet strength: The pull force of the magnet (magnet on bare steel plate) is about 13 lbs. On other surfaces like refrigerators it should feel more like 3-5 lbs since some are made of stainless or have a coating on them. Perfect for holding keys, multiple pieces of paper (or thick cards).

Timeline

  • 2024

  • March - Conceive the project
  • August - Start collaborating with artists to generate the molecule art
  • November - Begin production. I pick away at these projects in between job shop work.

  • 2025

  • January - Take media for project, launch. Continue laser engraving and sanding. Begin initial fulfillment.
  • Late February - This is when I anticipate getting more magnets. Assembly and fulfillment of remaining orders should be very quick once this comes in.
