FujoCoded LLC: Software and education for a better web

For the past four years, we’ve been working within the transformative fandom community to understand the barriers to fans building communal spaces for themselves on the web. This experience has informed a series of projects to chart a path towards a more empowered future, where online subcultures collaborate among themselves and with each other to take more control of their experience on the web.

Last year, we took a bold step towards this future by fundraising for The Fujoshi Guide to Web Development. With the success of that Kickstarter, and the guide’s production well underway, it’s time for our next steps: establishing a sustainable way forward by formalizing our ongoing work under a real company with an official mission, hiring skilled contractors from our community, and opening our company store–just some of the many impactful milestones we have planned for this campaign.

Introducing FujoCoded LLC

A card with a purple gradient, and a blue, purple, and hot pink outline. A FujoCoded lemon logo lit up in yellow mimicking a neon sign is centered on the card. Beneath it 'FujoCoded' is in hot pink glowing text, tilted upward. The 'fujo' portion is in a scripted font and the j is dotted with a sparkle; the coded portion is in monospace font. A smaller LLC is beneath 'FujoCoded' on the right in electric blue glowing text tilted down to the left.

FujoCoded LLC is the culmination of the work we’ve been doing for the past four years. It collects various projects we’ve launched and more that we’re planning under the same banner. These projects, as well as the company’s mission, are focused on three pillars:

  • Education, which gives people the skills to be the change they want to see on the web.
  • Software, which gives people the tools to make such changes.
  • Community, which gives people the strength, structure, and support to see those changes through.

To fund our mission, we’re currently producing the first book in our Fujoshi Guide to Web Development series, as well as developing software to meet a need within the existing web ecosystem (that people are open to paying for). However, to ensure long-term success, we must do more than build products to sell: we need to be certain that our legal ducks are in order, and that we can feasibly hire talent within the community.

Update: We're Now 100% Funded!

Thanks to your support, we’ve now reached our goal! Let’s keep going to unlock more stretch goals:

A chart to track the campaign progress, styled a bit like a health bar or a mercury thermometer that breaks past the image boundaries. The image has a purple gradient, and a blue, purple, and hot pink outline. The monospace text is in neon blue and hot pink. The FujoCoded lemon logo is lit up in yellow. Our first goal might be done, but our mission isn’t! Alternating between “fun” (merch) and “functional” (programming articles), our stretch goals deliver both value and entertainment! $3,000—Reached! $4,000—Shipper at work (AO3 edition) Reached $5,000—Close the JavaScript gap Reached $6,000—Website Art Prints Reached $7,000—Catching up with Terminal Reached $8,000—Crucial confrontations Reached

One final stretch goal

Stretch Goal ∞ – Over 9000! We’ve hit all our stretch goals, so here’s a final impromptu treat for you all: if we hit $9,000–that is, 300% funded–we’ll commission ONE FINAL COMMEMORATIVE STICKER featuring Boba-tan and the “over 9,000” meme, and gift it for free to all our backers with physical rewards. Why? Because doing funny, absurd, “meme-y” things is what our internet is all about. It’s over $9,000!

Our goal for the campain

Our projects take time and effort, but forming an official company, with a store to sell merchandise to help fund those projects, takes resources. That’s why it's time to collect your seed… money.

To quote Wikipedia, seed money is very early funding meant to support a business until it can generate cash of its own. Your generous seed donation (😉) will allow FujoCoded LLC, to do the following:

  • Recoup the cost of LLC formation fees and initial lawyer consultation.
  • Pay the annual LLC tax for this year.
  • Hire an employment lawyer to draft contracts for two types of contractors: web developers and artists.
  • Contract with a fandom-sourced developer to build our company storefront (with Astro and Shopify), where we can sell the Fujoshi Guide and other merchandise to support our mission—like the ones you'll get as rewards!

With your help, we can set ourselves up for success by formalizing all we've been working towards, and by establishing our first revenue source as we work to create more. This will allow us to continue working on initiatives like the ones you can read about on our projects page.

Once this first goal is met, we have more exciting goals planned, ranging from new articles to help onboard fans into modern JavaScript development to more money to pay contractors with! Any extra funds we collect will go into keeping FujoCoded LLC sustainable in the long term (and help smooth out our path towards world web domination).

Community Achievements and Stretch Goals

A chart to track the campaign progress, styled a bit like a health bar or a mercury thermometer. $4,000—Shipper at work (AO3 edition) Reached $5,000—Close the JavaScript gap Reached $6,000—Website Art Prints $7,000—Catching up with Terminal $8,000—Crucial confrontations Reached

$4000 – Shipper at work [Unlocked]

Our first version of this "shipping" sticker features VSCode and a terminal, but there's more than one type of shipping... here's to the other one!

Stretch Goal #1 Shipping your side project on company time is good, but you know what's even better? Doing the *other* type of shipping. Show you're doing your part against capitalism with this AO3-inspired variant of one of our stickers. Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. That's why I ship on company time. The image has celebratory confetti and a big "unlocked" stamp.

$5000 –  Closing the NPM Loop [Unlocked]

Stretch Goal #2 It’s time! With our first sticker unlocked, we move to a new category of rewards: beginner-friendly articles to publish on our teaching hub, fujoweb.dev. Once we reach this goal, we’ll contract with a tech writer from our network to fix a major roadblock for new web developers: understanding the Node Package Manager (NPM), and using it to create, use, or collaborate on modern JavaScript applications. The image has celebratory confetti and a big "unlocked" stamp.
Once we reach $5000, we can take the resources we offer to the next level. Hitting this goal will enable us to:

  • Help our community overcome a major obstacle in their web development journey: installing and managing JavaScript libraries using NPM, the Node Package Manager. To do this, we'll contract with a fandom-sourced writer to create our first free article on fujoweb.dev.

  • Hire an employment lawyer to draft a contract for this and future article writers.

  • Recoup part of the costs from producing merchandise for this campaign.

$6000 – Website Art prints [Unlocked]

Stretch Goal #3 We know what you like! Is it the slow-burning sexual tension between a bleeding-heart hero and their brooding villainous counterpart? Gleefully ignoring canon to ship whatever you want? Keysmashing at the sexy art that just dropped in chat? Yes, all that. But also, art prints! Once we reach this goal, we will unlock not one, not two, but three 8”x10”-sized art prints of the incredible illustrations on our website! Below it's a pic of 3 art prints.
Next up, we'll turn the excellent art on our website into prints! These are 8"x10"-sized art prints that will look amazing without breaking the bank.
A screenshot of the FujoCoded homepage. The color scheme is primarily purples with hot pink accents. The artwork of Boba-tan and the Fujoguide cast are framed in OS-style windows, and can be dragged around on the page. One image is moved to the side to reveal another illustration underneath. A Better Web Together From books to communities, open source libraries to full-fledged software projects, FujoCoded creates tools and opportunities for fujoshi (& friends) to take control of their online world. A button: About our projects Shape the Next Web A new web is coming! Supported by years of experience working within fan communities (and some deep technical chops), our work aims to change who can join the conversation about the online spaces of the future. A button: About our mission

$7000 – Terminal Help [Unlocked]

Stretch Goal #4 We've had one article, yes, but what about second article? With our overview of NPM already unlocked, it's time to focus our efforts on another barrier to web development proficiency: not knowing the Terminal. This stretch goal will help us teach people enough to wield its powers...or at least not fear Him as much. Unlocked! Catching up with Terminal

Another common issue for beginner developers: how to *start* learning how to handle the Terminal.

This will require research to determine the major roadblocks, which is how our project operates: active learning from those going through it all!

$8000 – Crucial confrontations [Unlocked]

Stretch Goal #5 With two technical articles already under our belt, it’s time to try something... different. We all know that when working with others, soft skills are as important as hard ones–and yet we so rarely teach them. This last article and stretch goal will cover a fundamental skill our community could benefit from learning: how to firmly (but kindly) confront each other when issues arise. REACHED. Crucial Confrontations

A first article extracting some wisdom from the book "Crucial Confrontations", which some of our collaborators have found a transformative read.

After years of working within our community, we repeatedly found that developing effective communication and confrontation skills helps our collaborators thrive. Unfortunately, the world doesn't teach us how to effectively (but kindly) hold each other accountable.

Given this experience, we deeply believe that making some of the wisdom in this book accessible to people (without reading a full book) will allow all of us to collaborate better.

Help us show soft skills are as important as hard ones!

Risks and Challenges

For our first goal of building our storefront, we don't expect major risks: we already have all the rewards ready (with the exception of actual production), and a contractor we've worked with previously who is up to the challenge. While we haven't found an employment lawyer well-suited to our purposes, funds to expand our search will help; please get in touch with us if you know a good fit!

The usual production risks of delayed production due to unforeseen circumstances (like natural disasters, etc), do apply. But we will do our best to fulfill all merch options within a timely manner.

For our stretch goals, we don't have a writer contractor in mind, nor have we previously worked with one for technical writing. However, we have experience figuring out how to work with fannish folks, which will ease the process.

The goal of this campaign is to get more of our work done without our founder personally overseeing the bulk of it. However, she'll still have to coordinate some of the work, and provide feedback and technical guidance. While this could introduce some delays if things get hectic, we don't foresee significant impacts on the eventual delivery. It is also an opportunity to learn to delegate further.
