What's inside? - The Comet Codex: Core Bundles

This BackerKit project is aiming to fund the creation of 'The Comet Codex' - a D&D 5e compatible bestiary. Also available during this crowdfunding campaign will be a new set of epic miniatures - each worthy to be the next villain or boss battle in your next campaign!

The Comet Codex will be a 50 creature bestiary based on my work as Comet Lord Miniatures. This supplement will contain D&D 5e compatible mechanics/stats, art and lore for each creature. Many entries will be based on past miniatures released over the years, but will include new creations like 'The False Dragon' and more.

There will not be a physical version of The Comet Codex. As much as I would like to make a physical book, it's just not an option with the current reach of Comet Lord Miniatures. The physical bundles will include a PDF of The Comet Codex, not a book.

The Comet codex will provide a D&D 5e compatible PDF done by industry professional artists, designers, and writers who have worked for companies like MCDM, Ghostfire Gaming, Wizard of The Coast, Darrington Press and more.

Give your players deadly encounters with nightmarish horrors from within this bestiary and tell a dark tale they will never forget!

Boss Battles & More

As a fan of Soulsborne titles, Zelda, NieR, Blasphemous and more - the supplement will include many monsters that channel the idea of a boss battle from the games I love, the minions that serve them and more creatures to encounter your party of heroes.
Many of the creatures in this bestiary will also follow themes of dark fantasy and gothic horror like my work has over the years. If you know my work, I tend to sculpt creatures that would work best as a 'boss battle encounter' or the final battle for a story.

How to facilitate these epic encounters or dramatic boss battles with my creations? Willy Abeel (Twitter / Website) helped me out by designing some new rules to seamlessly add these creatures to your game.

Dread Actions

The most terrifying entities of the realms of Edyn are infused with dread. Have your players face off against solo boss monsters that will keep up with entire adventuring parties– maybe even defeat them if they are not prepared!

This supplement gives these enemies 5e compatible rules that allow them to immediately respond to your players in kind. These new mechanics are aptly named Dread Actions for the feeling they instill. The greatest of threats also come with their own Signature Dread Actions that can alter the flow of combat, warp the battlefield, annihilate foes or bring the next phase of a climactic battle.
Even the greatest threats have minions to help them carry out their diabolical plans or defend them against the greatest of champions. Some creatures will also be designed to interact with their special minions throughout encounters to challenge your players and weave the most dire of narratives.

You can check out multiple creatures with these brand new actions in the preview PDF below!

I wanted to make sure that the community and backers have some idea of the quality of work I want to strive for. I’ve worked with absolutely fantastic industry professionals to help bring this preview to life. This preview includes 10 monsters (12 including minions) – each with lore, stats, and art! Also, this preview includes the new rules introduced in The Comet Codex– Dread Actions!

Shipping & Handling Physical Miniatures

All the physical miniatures will be produced at and shipped from TrenchWorx's shop in Utah.

I don’t know how much shipping the physical goods will cost, but I know it can be expensive, because shipping is expensive now. TrenchWorx can, and do, shop around to ‘game the system’ to get the lowest prices, but shipping, especially international shipping, shot way up during 2020-2022 and while it has settled down a little it is still expensive.

If you purchase any physical miniatures they will be shipped all at once, even the add-ons that are available on my shop already. If you want the add-ons miniatures like 'The False Hydra' right away, please purchase it over on my website.

If you select either physical bundles, shipping & handling could be $150 or higher depending on final location outside of the US.

Shipping & Handling charges will be applied at the close of the pledge manager. Yes, taxes are collected where it is required to by law.

TrenchWorx are unable to ship physical rewards outside of the following countries:
  • United States
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • European Union - Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Reminder:  Shipping & Handling charges will be collected at close of pledge manager.  They are not included in the current pledge amounts.

Digital Files

The PDF and STL files will most likely be delivered at least initially through BackerKit itself. This will let me update and get the files to all backers easily. However, I will also send emails to redeem the STLs on MyMiniFactory.

Timeline

I'm hoping I'll have The Comet Codex delivered within 12 months of funding. However, if anything comes up I'll communicate that with backers. I imagine that it really depends on the availability of artists and designers - I'm not the only one they work with! Art is probably the thing that will take the longest to create.

Physical miniatures is a hard thing to estimate since I don't know how many will be sold. Casting False Dragons or False Hydras take more time than player characters for example! A general estimate would be delivery by the end of the year or as late as this time next year.

3D Printable STLs will be the quickest to deliver. Everything in the core and add-ons has been test printed. It's just making sure everything is consistent with the physical miniatures as minor adjustments might be necessary. I would estimate delivery would be 1-3 months after funding.
Edit

I’m an indie digital sculptor and creator of Comet Lord Miniatures. I’ve been sculpting and releasing miniatures for tabletop gaming since 2017. From 2019 to 2023, I ran my Patreon releasing 3D printable miniature packs monthly. I went on hiatus from monthly releases last year, during that time I started working with others to create the preview for this project.
Comet Lord Miniatures came from combining my passion for tabletop games and digital sculpting. I’ve always loved telling stories and creating miniatures was another avenue to express these stories. The goal has always been to deliver the highest quality product I can. It’s not just about sculpting fidelity– it’s about telling a story with my work, inspiring other dungeon masters and leaving players thinking twice about fighting the creature that appears before them.

This marks a new step for Comet Lord Miniatures. I’d like to expand to making supplements that can accompany, support and enhance the work I’ve done over the years.

If you’re curious about my past work - please check out my website or MyMiniFactory store. I have a catalog of miniatures from over the years, many of them will be referenced or included in The Comet Codex.
There is also a community Discord server for Comet Lord Miniatures.

Why Crowdfunding?

The simple answer is that this project is just way too expensive to fund by myself all at once. I also really need to gauge interest in this type of product. Surveys I’ve sent out tell me that the majority of my community are interested in a bestiary, but I need to see how many people inside and outside of my community actually want one.

Art & Design

This project will be a change of pace as I can't do this alone. Like anything I release I want The Comet Codex to be of the highest quality that I can deliver, and filled with content to inspire.
I’ve already started working with other industry professionals to make the preview and this campaign a reality.

A tabletop RPG bestiary needs art- so much art. Good art isn’t cheap and I think most monsters in a bestiary should be illustrated if possible. Simply getting enough high quality art produced in a reasonable amount of time will be a challenge.

Fulfillment

This isn’t my first crowdfunding campaign, I have had experience in releasing digital files for years now. So figuring out delivery of digital products and quickly fixing any problems that may come up is nothing new for me.
I’ve spoken to and worked with industry professionals to develop the free preview of The Comet Codex. I’ve developed a good understanding of the workflow moving forward with this project. This also comes with the understanding that this is my first 5e supplement.

This isn’t my manufacturer's first crowdfunding project either. TrenchWorx has done much larger crowdfunding projects like the MCDM Kickstarters. They also make the physical miniatures available on my website. They are experts in their field and are great to work with.

I can’t see the miniature production having any risks at this point– but, any project should be prepared for hiccups along the way.
Edit

If this project funds, I would like to continue making this kind of tabletop content! I also understand that there will not be miniatures for every creature in The Comet Codex in this campaign.
Depending on the level of success, I may sculpt creatures from The Codex to be released on my Patreon as 3D printable STLs and later developed as physical products.

Also depending on if this funds, I imagine I will either run future crowdfunding campaigns for more volumes of the codex or deep dives into particular parts of my setting - like The Gothic lands of Itheria or The Perpetual Order of Absentia! First we need to see if enough people like The Comet Codex.
