This may have been discussed before, but now that NESS is an unqualified, runaway success, I wanted to bring it up. How wild would a shared, Thieves’ World-style project by NESS creators be? I remember as a kid being fascinated with the TW idea (although I haven’t been able to penetrate it as an adult). But with the incredible talent and imagination in the NESS community, I have to think something fresh, new and exciting would be the result. How do y’all think this would end up looking?

Project Update: 101% funded! Onward to Double Art! DOU-BLE ART, DOUB-LE ART, DOUB-LE ART!
IN SHORT
- We've funded in just over four days! That's incredible, especially considering we've expanded to doing three issues this year.
- Bonus Stories Unlocked: Sharing our Bluesky crowdfund launch post over 200 times unlocked a bonus story for each of our three issues, authored by Dariel R.A. Quiogue, Bryn Hammond, and Oliver Brackenbury.
Who knows what might happen if it was shared...more? - Our next livestream: This Wednesday at 7pm EST, right here on the campaign page, join Molly Tanzer, editor Oliver Brackenbury, and special guests to discuss a classic Jirel of Joiry adventure - The Dark Land.
- Next Goal: Now we're working toward our first stretch goal (aka Achievement), DOUBLE ART. As I'm writing this we're 89% of the way there.
We've unlocked this for all of our past issues, making two pieces of art per story or article the standard readers like you have come to expect!
IN DETAIL
Thank you so much for getting us to minimum funding in only four days. This is very exciting, as it gives us plenty of time to push through more stretch goals like DOUBLE ART, and INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING DISCOUNT, as well as pay raises for our contributors!
Why, the vim and vigor you've brought to our campaign has gotten us listed on the main page of Backerkit as one of the top hottest projects right now!
And yet...could we perhaps claim the absolute top, biggest spot on the main age? Would you like to help us climb these castle walls to glory?
The way campaigns get featured on Backerkit's main page is through strong activity on the Community Tab, like where many backers have been sharing their answers to the question "What do you want to see more of in Sword & Sorcery...and Planet?" Please feel free to ask questions, make suggestions, or just say hello over on the Community tab, knowing that simply by chatting with your fellow backers you're also helping get us in front of fresh eyeballs!
Chatting with your fellow S&S fans can even win you FREE, ANNOTATED SOFTCOVERS OF ALL THREE ISSUES!
Scroll down our Exclusives, Unlockables, and Add-Ons section and you'll see...
THE TOP BACKER, meaning the backer who is most active in our Community tab, will receive softcovers of 5, 6, & 7 that have each been annotated (using post-its, not writing on the page unless you give him permission) by editor & publisher Oliver Brackenbury, providing special insight into the process of producing the issues.
Not too shabby!
Alright, that feels like plenty for now. Thanks so much again for backing us! There's plenty more livestreams, achievements, unlockable rewards, and good times to come.
Sincerely,
...but what would YOU like to see?
I, Oliver, would - beyond the inclusivity aspect - love to see more...
Draping S&S like a cloak over another genre. Robert E. Howard himself did this all the time. The God in the Bowl is an S&S locked room mystery. Beyond the Black River is an S&S frontier western tale. You get the idea…
To be clear, this is not blending genres, putting cowboys in with barbarians etc. This is using some or all of the format of another genre to tell an S&S tale, in an S&S setting, with S&S characters.
Non-monarchial secondary worlds or kingdoms. We can do anything in a secondary world, it doesn’t always have to be kings and queens.
Whimsy! Not a joke. We get lots of great pulse pounding, Weird tales submitted to us, but rarely are they threaded with the kind of wry humor one finds in the works of Leiber or Vance.
How about you?
