Bluff Pastry - A Devious Game for Two

Uh, oh, the moment the Queen hired two pie chefs you feared this day would come.

The castle is expecting important visitors and they’ve sent a message ahead about their very specific pie requests. The Queen has assigned a pie to each of you, and you better not get it wrong.

Only issue is, as per royal decree, you must offer any ingredients in your larder to the highest bidder. You check over the decree wording, and notice there’s no specific wording saying you have to tell the truth about what you’re offering, so perhaps that’s the ace up your sleeve!

Take turns offering and bidding on ingredients, until your larder is empty, and then pray the pie turns out to be something resembling their order.

In this fun, fast-moving game of, well, basically lying and cheating to get your own way, a cool nerve and a twitchless demeanor will stand you in good stead!

Through five nerve-wracking rounds of distrust, you must do your very best, or your very worst, to collect the ingredients that will save your job and your neck!

Or perhaps you just want to land your opponent with a stomach-turning apple and mushroom choux pastry topped with a splash of mint sauce? (We wouldn't blame you!)

Just like no-one's mother ever made!

The Cards

A Little More About the Rules

So, what's it all about?

Bluff Pastry is a fun, bluffing game for two players (chefs) which lasts 15 to 20 minutes.

There are 18 cards overall; 16 ingredient cards, divided into 4 pastry, 4 sweet fillings, 4 savoury fillings and 4 sauces, and 2 Bluff Point cards.

Before play begins, chefs use a 4xd4 to secretly reveal the pie they need to make for the arriving visitors, and keep this knowledge to themselves!

With this knowledge in hand, the ingredients are shuffled and 5 cards dealt to each chef. The remaining 6 cards are placed face up on the table in two rows of three. This is the larder.

Played over 5 rounds, chefs take it in turns to place a card from their hand down and bluff about the type of card it is - Pastry, Sweet, Savoury or Sauce.

Using the cards in their hand and placed on the table (in the larder), the chef must attempt to work out if the other player is telling the truth. As they do not know what's in the other chef's hand, it is only ever a best guess!

If they get it right, they gain a Bluff Point, which they record on their Bluff Point card, and then they have the choice of picking up the card on the table or taking one at random from the opposing chef's hand.

After each round, the chefs place a card from their hand into the ingredients of their own pie, and spend Bluff Points to acquire ingredients from the larder that they need.

After the final round, the chef's pies are revealed and the scores are tallied!

Innsmouth is a dark and shadowed town, full of secrets and danger.

You play a private investigator, asked to find a child kidnapped by the townsfolk. But beware, the residents aren’t quite what you expect!

It’s up to you to navigate the town whilst trying not to be seen; the higher your conspicuousness, the more likely you are to come face to face with the enemy.

You must use your experience, stealth, power, speed, and perception to help you successfully navigate the many locations and people within. Not all are enemies, and it is up to you to choose who to trust and who to fight.

You probably won’t make it through on your first attempt (nor second, nor third), but don’t despair! Re-enter the town and forge a new path toward your goal.

You’re a long way from home, but your expenses are being paid and then some. And how hard can it be? All you have to do is retrieve some ugly ornament and take it home. Customs won’t even take a second look at it.

The year is 1913, and you play a private investigator sent to retrieve a strange idol from a remote Scottish island. Only problem is, the island is inhabited by cultists who'd happily see you perish than give up their sacred statue.

Monuments collects the first three adventures of A Branching Narrative, my gamebook newsletter.

Quest 1: The Watchtower - The tower is high, though it looked higher before you scaled the rock-face which supports it. You have been chosen for your skills, and you must not fail.

Quest 2: Vents! - You wake with a start, confused by all the noise. There are at least two different alarms blaring, and you can hear people moving around on the spaceship. Clearly, this was not the best space faring vessel to stowaway on.

Quest 3: Entombed - You awake and everything is dark. The ground beneath you is cold and hard, and when you turn your hands over and press your fingers into it, it feels like stone. Not only, that, but your elbows scrape against more stone either side of you, and the air, well, there's nothing fresh about it.

All you need to play is a pencil and two six-sided die.

Written by Simon Birks, internal art by Willi Roberts, cover art by Lyndon White.

Navigate your village to safety by ascending the Mount of Variya before the flood waters consume you!

Up to six players can take part in this adventure, each navigating their own village. Take turns to climb the steps, try and keep as many villagers alive, pray to the Gods for help and plot against your components to score the most points!
