Enter a world of magic, romance, and epic adventure quests in my first book, "Lockett Studio's : Universal Truths of Greek Mythology" Coming in February 2025, written and Illustrated by myself.
WHAT IS THIS? "Universal Truths of Greek Mythology" is a contemporary, Illustrated, educational art book for teens and adults. The book contains over 130 full page illustrations and concise text summaries illuminating ancient literary sources such as Hesiod, Diodorus, The Homeric Hymns, Apollodorus, and Apollonius of Rhodes.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER GREEK MYTH BOOKS? 1.) THE ART STYLE is a handcrafted homebrew concoction, 30 years in the making. My Illustrations bring a contemporary vision, breathing fresh life into these ancient tales. 2.) WEALTH OF IMAGERY: If im not mistaken, I am one of the only artists in history to create this high amount of 130 full page images based on this singular topic of Greek Mythology. (2 years of full time work). 3.) EDGY and MATURE: I didnt want to water down the source material by shying away from controversial content, therefore this book is for teens and adults (not children) as it leans into the darker, more mature subject matter, staying true to the ancient literary sources. 4.)AUTHENTIC SOURCES: I have spent the last two years immersed in ancient literary sources such as Hesiod's "Theogony", and "Works and Days," Apollodorus "Library," Diodorus "Library of History, and Apollonius "Argonautica." among others, thus ensuring the highest level of authenticity in my portrayals. 5.) ACCESSIBILITY: because I keep each text entry limited to one page, I stay very concise and to the point, allowing the reader to move through the material at a quicker pace and not get bogged down in too much dense, academic detail.
WHO IS THIS FOR? This book is for people who love vibrant contemporary illustration, epic mythology, literature with morally complex characters, history and world culture, fantasy, teachers and students, hellenists and pagans, and those curious souls drawn to wonder, magic, and mystery.
WHO AM I? I am an award winning illustrator who graduated from Parsons School of Design in NYC with a bachelor's degree in Illustration. After working in advertising, and as a lead concept artist on the triple AAA title "American Mcgee's Alice: Madness Returns" (EA/XBOX 360) I decided to work remotely and began traveling and I have lived as a globetrotting digital nomad in over 13 countries over the last ten years.
WHY DID I DO THIS? growing up with my father who is a literature teacher, poet, and philosopher taught me the value of literature and exposure to world cutlures. After becoming a world traveler living in 13 different countries over ten years has truly opened my eyes to the power of cross cultural storytelling. When I lived in Athens, exploring sites like the Agora, Delphi, Corinth, and Epehesus in Turkey, these tales came to life in a new for me, and what had been a fondness blossomed into an all out love affair.
In my view the ancient greek myths are some of the most elegant, heartbreaking, and sophisticated tales of flawed heroes and tragic creatures ever made by humankind. I want to make these tales and cultures accessible to people who havent properly been introduced. I hope my art and accessible texts can ignite a deeper curiosity and passion for this most elegant storytelling tapestry.
HOW DID I DO THIS? a.) I spent two years immersed in the ancient literary sources such as Hesiod, Homer, Appollodorus, and Apollonius to educate myself and to bring you the most authentic overview of the myths. No AI, completely written by hand from the heart, by a human mortal for other human mortals.
b.) I lived in Athens Greece for two months wandering the Agora, Acropolis, Archeaology museum, with trips out to Delphi, Corinth, and Ephesus in Turkey. This gave me deeper insight into the rich tapestry of history and culture of ancient Greece.
c.) Because I am not a PHD classics student, I have collaborated with the help of my more formally educated social media followers to help me keep my content accurate and for feedback and editing support.
d.) Before setting out to tackle such a daunting topic; I became very intentional about my stylistic consistency and prolific art output, vowing to complete 2 finished illustrations per week. I knew If I stayed consistent, like Sisyphus and his boulder, I would eventually push the boulder up to the peak. And im almost there! Woohoo!! e.) Two years ago I decided to stop approaching my career as an artist, and more like a startup business. Which meant that I needed to create a commercial product that people wanted, and set milestone goals to quantify growth and profitability. This book is the first product of that plan, with many more projects on the way from my startup creative studio; "Lockett Studio," which is made up of four brand pillars: mind-blowing art, authenticity in cultural representation, innovation in technology, and accessibility of educational content.
