What is Undoing Ruin?

Undoing Ruin is a tabletop role-playing game inspired by works such as NieR: Automata, N9ne, and the X-Com series, set in a world where an AI rebellion caused the collapse of a dystopian cyberpunk society and pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. Unable to fight back against superior mechanical armies, humanity created Androids, machines capable of thinking, feeling, and resisting the influence of their enemies, to fight back.

Set roughly 50 years after the fall, players in Undoing Ruin take on the roles of Androids fighting to create a better future for humanity, at the point where the war has started to turn in their favor. As ghosts from the old world try to dictate the course of the new one, the Androids need to come to terms with their own inherent humanity, and find a way to avoid repeating the mistakes and cruelties of the past and build a better future for all, not just for mankind.

What's the End Product?

The funding for this campaign is intended to finance an initial print run of Undoing Ruin through online distributors, including a PDF release alongside an 8.5"x11" hardcover black and white rulebook. At the time of this teaser going live, the game is nearing completion, and I hope to fulfill the campaign goals by late Summer or early Fall of 2024. With the PDF nearly completed, it should just be a matter of adding credits and incentives from pledges into the document.

The rulebook for Undoing Ruin Contains:
  • 61 pages of character creation options.
  • An extensive NPC index featuring dozens of threats to use in your games.
  • Light rules for building structures on the world map and changing the world as your play the game.
  • A primer of the background and setting of the game world.

How does the Game Play?

Undoing Ruin uses a 2d6 roll-engine and aims to strike a balance between crunch and narrative. The game has a heavy emphasis on character customization and allows players to change out most aspects of their character over the course of play. A major theme of the game is Androids determining their true selves and exploring their identity, and the game is written to enable as much player experimentation as possible so that players also get a chance to figure out what their chosen playstyle is.

Furthermore, the game features a system of negotiated conflict resolution called "Narrative Actions" separate from its dice system. This system is a conversation between player and game-runner to enable absolute success "rule of cool" moments that make a difference at the right moments. In universe, this system is representative of an Android breaking away from their core directives and acting on their own thoughts and feelings, breaking the rules of their code just as players can use this system to break the rules of the game.

Who Are We?

Idle Hands Games LLC is a one-man team based out of New Jersey. I've worked with a number of very talented people over the course of developing Undoing Ruin and I'm extremely excited to bring their contributions to the project to life. While this is the first game I have put out, I am working with associates within the industry to ensure a smooth launch and fulfillment process.

Thank you for any interest you might have in this project, even if it's just adding yourself to the email list for when the campaign goes live! This game has been a major labor of love for me, having been started back in early 2019 and having been worked on for the past five years. I'm extremely excited to see this project come to fruition and I hope that you're interested in becoming part of it.
