A crew of boneriggers take a rest in the Nightward

One of the things we love about world building is exploring the logical impact that magic will have on a society. You see this in many ways in the setting Keith created for Dungeons and Dragons, Eberron. It's just as much part of Eidolon: only this is a world where the strongest form of magic is the binding of ghosts. It's a city in which your coach is pulled by poltergeists, and where your armor is the spirit of the lover you failed to save but who protects you still... but it's a place where hope is still more powerful than fear. We hope you'll follow the project and come October help us bring it to life!

Thanks for following the project!

Why We're Making This

Last year at GenCon,  Matt Mercer (Critical Role) and the team from Darrington Press welcomed us to the stage and announced that we will be creating an official world their new collaborative storytelling system- DaggerHeart. In preparation for writing that official world, we took one of our beloved fantasy worlds that was on the shelf and used it as a "first pancake" to explore Daggerheart, the way it embraces collaborative storytelling, and to develop features that shine in the system. Well, we fell in love with the first pancake and the stories of hope, conflict, and deep connection people have made with it.  We're bringing it to BackerKit in hopes you can help us fund the project and publish it under the Community Gaming License.

Watch It Played Now!
Hello Followers & Friends!

Keith ran a Daggerheart one shot of Eidolon: The Ghost Market at San Diego Comic Con for an amazing cast of top notch players: Jeremy Crawford (Darrington Press), Anjali Bhimani (Critical Role), Kelly Lynne D'Angelo (Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds), and  Vince Caso (The Guild).  Now for the first time you can watch it played right here! Go ahead, put it on in the background while you're at work-tell your boss it's team building research :)

There are two full campaign frames in Eidolon:The Ghost Market, both allow you to create characters that work together with supernatural resilience to give hope in the city of ghosts. One campaign focuses on Boneriggers (think supernatural Sweeney Todd and Peaky Blinders) while the others are, well, caterers (Party Down meets KPop Demon Hunters). This one shot is The Catering Crew.

Only one week for us to try and meet our 2000 follower goal! Could you help us spread the word?
Share the project on your favorite Discord, Reddit group, or social media platform and let folks know what makes this world interesting to you. We appreciate and  Thank you!

What You'll Find in Paradise
Greetings!

Earlier this week we  announced a truly spectacular free item when you back the project in the first 48 hours- a printed map pack of 5 different maps. Time slips by so we highly suggest you follow the project now so you get an alert when we launch!  If you already have- thank you! Today we continue our walking tour of the ghost city of Eidolon.  Today, we soak in the sights of Paradise.

The gate entry to Paradise by Charlie Ferguson- Avery

Eidolon is bleak stone beneath a sunless sky, but there is one place where you can always find beauty: PARADISE. Here ivy covers the old walls and the scent of flowers mingles with the fine food being prepared in elegant restaurants. Trees are scattered around the district, from individual sentinels in tiny alcoves to the vast Duskwood, a grand park where the ancients and their partisans preen and promenade. Masque Row holds many venues for entertainment. Take in an opera at the Drakalov Requiem, savoring the sounds of the eternal chorus. Enjoy a meal at the Harp, where the spectral fingers of the legendary Avalara pluck the strings of the eponymous instrument. The Garden of House Drakalov is walled off, but if you have the gold you can relax at the Wellspring spa, where Drakalov partisans will tend to your every need.

These fine entertainments are truly marvelous, but none of them come cheap. While they are crusted with moss and ivy, the Hollow Soldiers of House Drakalov are merciless steel guardians ready to drive undesirables from the district. Yet there is a place in Paradise even for those who can’t afford a night on Mask Row. The Faeward runs along the edge of the Dirge. When the city was first built, this housed the retinue of the Queen of Broken Mirrors, and it has remained a cultural nexus for the fey-folk of Eidolon ever since. Here you can find elves, faeries, goblins, and others who can trace their roots to the Twilight Realm. While Elves may call it home, the magical mysteries of the Faeward are open to all. The Dryad’s Rest always has enchanting entertainment, and the Pavilions—seen in the image above—hold wild revels every two weeks. With that said, many people believe that the Faeward holds dangers for common mortals; the upstanding orderborne folk of the Forge shun the Faeward and its revels.

How is it that the trees of Paradise flourish in poor soil with no sun? In the days when Eidolon was solely a cemetery, people came from around the world to die near the Harrowgate. The Tulamor practiced primal traditions drawing on the powers of the natural world. Every tree in Paradise was once a Tulamor champion. As a druid in Eidolon you may be drawing on the memories of these elders; when you assume the form of a beast, you could be channeling the spirit of an animal guardian buried with its Tulamor companion.

Take a moment to soak in the sights of Paradise. The tour will continue soon!

Over the next few weeks we’re going to take you on a walking tour of Eidolon, telling you a little about each district of the city. Join us below as we start our tour in the district of Harrowgate. Inspired? Intrigued? Tell us your impressions of this district in the comments!

Harrowgate: The Center of The Haunted City of Eidolon ( illustration by Charlie Ferguson-Avery)

Harrowgate

Eidolon is a haunted city, equal parts Sweeney Todd, Dracula, and Neuromancer. Industry is driven by necromancy; the coaches on the streets are pulled by poltergeists and the lamps are lit with fingerbones. It’s shrouded in gloom and people need hope—and that’s why they need you.

Our tour begins in Harrowgate, the heart of the city. It’s easy to find; just look for the monolith rising up from the sealed gate to the Underworld. Right away you’ll notice that it’s cleaner and quieter than most of the city, hewn from polished marble and home to the administrative offices of the city. There are no factories spewing spite into the air, no barkers calling to customers. Here you’ll find the sprawling complex of the Guild of the Dead, where reapers tie ghosts to reliquaries and clerks maintain the vast archives of life contracts. The Quorum is where magistrates administer justice and the representatives of the noble families argue and scheme, and the Lycaeum is the school where the heirs of the Ancient Lords receive their education. Located between the Quorum and the Guild, The Barrow is the headquarters of the Grave Watch, serving as its primary garrison, armory, and prison. Members of the Guild and the Quorum often wear masks while on duty, and the streets are cold and silent.

The buildings of Harrowgate are pure white stone, intended to strike awe into observers. There are no repurposed graves here, but there’s a different relic of the past: shrines. Before Eidolon was a city, this area held shrines dedicated to the deities and faiths of all of the different cultures whose luminaries were buried in the vast cemetery. The Ancient Lords have suppressed knowledge of these religions, but they’re afraid to actually destroy them. They’ve built around them and over them, but the abandoned shrines are still there, waiting to be found. Many of these shrines are underground, part of the Deep Labyrinth that surrounds the underworld gate. All of the aboveground shrines are connected to this complex, but the Antidora have sealed the hatches and tunnels that lead to it.

Welcome to Harrowgate. It’s grand, polished, intimidating and impressive—the seat of the system fueled by the ghosts of the common people. Throw a stone and you might hit a masked magistrate, a captain of the Watch, a harried clerk or a privileged noble student heading to the Lycaeum. There’s little reason for common folk to come here unless they plan to sell their ghost to the Guild or to climb the Harvest Wall. On the other hand, you might come to Harrowgate to steal a lover’s life contract from the Guild of the Dead, to strike a blow against the Grave Watch, or to consult with the power that lingers in an ancient shrine. Whatever your business, be careful; this is a dangerous place.
