BackerKit will be moderating a panel at GenCon 2016 with game creators who have run successful crowdfunding campaigns. If you’ve ever been curious about what it takes to run a campaign, join us! Attendance is FREE and you can sign up HERE.
In this series, we’ll be profiling some of the game makers who will be speaking on the panel. We’re thrilled to have Mark Morrison of Campaign Coins joining as one of five experts on our Crowdfunding panel at GenCon 2016!
Hi! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Who are you and what do you do?
“Campaign Coins is an Australian company making real metal coins for tabletop gaming. Andre started the company in 2007, so we’re the original gaming coin company. In addition to our classic fantasy range, we have made licensed coins and props for 13th Age, Call of Cthulhu, Fate, Freeport, Pathfinder, Red Dragon Inn, Shadow of the Demon Lord, and many more.”
You’ve had great success fully funding 3 campaigns! Can you say a few words about why you chose to go with crowdfunding over traditional production methods?
“Our coins are premium, so we keep the price down by selling direct from campaigncoins.com rather than going through wholesale distribution. Crowdfunding gives us a massive reach, and gets us right in touch with the people who love our coins. They always give us great ideas during each campaign. I love the friendships which form, and it’s such a joy when people get their coins at the other end.”
We’ll go into more depth at the panel, but what’s one piece of advice you would give to a game creator who is thinking about crowdfunding for the first time?
“Back a lot of projects, it’s the best way to learn. The saddest four words on a Kickstarter page are:
‘First created, 0 backed.’
Backing other projects (even for a dollar) lets you see how creators face challenges and overcome them. One challenge is managing the data after you fund; I always like to see creators using a pledgemanager like BackerKit, it gives me confidence that they will deliver.”
Where can people find you at GenCon?
“We’re in booth 455, just up the aisle from our great friends at Paizo. Marvel at our treasure and mock our Australian accents. We’ll have our whole range, including our freshly funded 13th Age coins, our black metal Shadow of the Demon Lord tokens, and our own metal D20 made with our friends at Q-Workshop. And, we’ll have prototypes for our new Kickstarter: evil electrum coins.”
What are you most excited about doing/playing/seeing at GenCon this year?
“GenCon is supersized this year, with True Dungeon expanding to the Lucas Oil stadium, and the largest exhibition hall ever. We can’t wait to be a part of that.”
Come hear Mark along with 4 other crowdfunding experts talk about what it takes to run a successful campaign at the BackerKit-moderated panel at GenCon 2016. Don’t miss it!
